Ohio Wesleyan prides itself on having a club for everyone and this year the Human Resources club is making its debut.
Human Resources is an interest that does not have a major at Ohio Wesleyan and interested students decided to form the club. Lily Delahoussaye, the president of the club, spoke on this dilemma.
“OWU does not have a human resources department or classes for it, but there are many interested students. So students, including myself, along with career connections, worked to create a school-sponsored club," said Delahoussaye
Human Resources exists within every company and business. It is responsible for the management of employees. Carolyn Lammert, an advisor for the club, explained the importance of the department.
“HR or Human Resources is a profession that focuses on a company's most important asset - its employees—to ensure they're satisfied, engaged, and have all the resources they require to perform as expected. Areas within HR include; employee relations, workplace culture, recruiting, hiring, training, skills development, workforce planning, policy implementation, analytics, benefits, payroll, government regulation, legal compliance, and safety,” said Lammert.
Lammert adds that there are a multitude of goals and future objectives that they hope to achieve.
“A valuable resource for students to gain insight into the HR profession, build professional networks, and develop skills that will serve them well in their careers, even if they’re not pursuing an HR-specific path. We want to include the following activities: Guest Speakers and Panels; Workshops & Skill-building Activities; Internship and Job Opportunities; Networking; Potentially Community Outreach and/or Social Responsibility Projects.”
One thing that both Lammert and Delahoussaye can agree on is the fact that every student is welcome and encouraged to join the club. Maria Colatruglio, a junior and treasurer for the club makes an important statement about this.
“You can be in any major or field; it does not have to be business, you can really do anything and be in the HR club. You have to interact with people regardless of your career, and this can help with that,” said Colatruglio.
For interested students, Colatruglio and Lammert have an important note. Colatruglio began with a first step and Lammert added more details.
“Join us on the engage page to get added to our email list and be a part of our meetings normally during lunch hour.” Lammert adds “ We hope to see you at the next meeting on Dec 2, 12-1 CORNS 209 (room not confirmed but most likely).”
