As Ohio Wesleyan Students prepare for their first full week of classes after returning from winter break, dangerously low temperatures within the central Ohio region raise concern for student safety. With temperatures ranging from a low of -4 degrees to a high of 9 degrees, even short walks can be challenging, but with the right strategies, students can stay safe and comfortable.

Layering clothing is going to be key, insulating layers including fleece and wool will be able to trap body heat, while a windproof and waterproof outer shield will provide protection from the elements. For students who are lucky enough to reside within warmer climates back home, investing in a nice winter jacket, hat, gloves, and scarf is totally worth it in the long run. Also, a pair of insulated boots will provide much more warmth and traction than a pair of old sneakers, while also keeping your feet dry all day.

Luckily, The Ohio Wesleyan Buildings and Grounds crew does an outstanding job clearing snow, and salting sidewalks so students are able to safely make it to their classes. However, it is still important to plan your routes carefully. Take advantage of indoor shortcuts and our heated buildings in order to limit exposure to cold temperatures.

Staying hydrated and nourished throughout the day will provide extreme benefits. Be sure to take advantage of the multiple dining areas around campus! Drinking warm beverages and eating full meals will allow your body to generate heat in order to keep you warm. Staying hydrated is more difficult during the winter, drinking cold water after coming inside is not first on everyone's list. Warm tea is a great way to get water in throughout the day without making it difficult!

Dressing appropriately, staying mindful of what your body needs, and planning your travel will allow you to safely brave the winter elements and stay focused on your studies.
