Have you ever wanted to travel abroad?
Ohio Wesleyan offers a vast amount of opportunities and programs for students who want to study abroad. The university emphasizes studying abroad as being one of the key perks of going to a liberal arts college.
Ohio Wesleyan’s study abroad page states, “A semester spent off-campus in a study away program, international or domestic, is practically a ‘must do’ for anyone attending a liberal arts college.”
Students can study abroad by going to a different country and taking classes through a foreign university. Anya Shevchik, a student who recently studied in Japan, shared her experience. Shevchik had known coming into college that she wanted to go abroad, specifically to Japan.
“There is a specific program in Japan that I learned about in high school to teach English. The study abroad program was one of the main reasons I chose Ohio Wesleyan,” said Shevchik.
While going abroad can be a challenging and lonely experience, Shevchik explained another student from Ohio Wesleyan went on the trip with her. Also, faculty members would reach out to her while abroad.
“My advisor reached out and made time to schedule my classes for the next semester to make sure I would still be on track,” said Shevchik.
Ohio Wesleyan has an extensive study abroad program. The university takes steps to help students to go abroad and stay on track with a desired major. Ohio Wesleyan even offers the ability to study abroad over the summer for those who want to keep up with a regular schedule during the year.
“Summer study abroad at a partner institution or organization for credit is an option that many students choose to do,” according to the OWU Study Abroad website, “especially those who have busy regular academic semesters.”
Some students, however, decide to not go abroad for a variety of reasons. Athletes and members of clubs may choose to stay on campus year-round to prevent missing events for their team or club. Some prefer to stay close to home and going abroad was not tempting enough to get them out of their comfort zone.
Mia Jung, a junior cheerleader and Spanish minor, looked into going abroad to learn the language first-hand. However, after some consideration decided against it. The Maryland native came to Ohio Wesleyan with her mother who works for the university.
“I love the idea of immersing myself into a different culture and I know it would be the best way for me to learn and understand the culture, however, I am not a huge traveler and would consider myself a huge homebody,” said Jung.
Ohio Wesleyan has many different options for studying abroad. The university partners with other universities around the world to make going abroad easier for students. They have programs for a plethora of majors, countries, and languages. They also have travel learning courses where students of Ohio Wesleyan take classes with Ohio Wesleyan professors teaching in different countries.
