On September 19, the Horizons Club hosted the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or the Mooncake Festival. This is a celebration within Chinese culture to celebrate family, community, and harvest.
During this festival, students could enjoy mooncakes and banana milk, as well as a buffet of tteokbokki for dinner. Along with that, there were blanket seating areas, a Picture area with balloons and lanterns, and a collaboration with the astronomy club, where they brought a telescope to look at the stars later that evening once the sun had set.
A sizable number of students came to participate in this event, and all seemed to be enjoying the calm and festive Moon Festival. Students were able to learn about another culture and immerse themselves in an experience they may or may not have before.
Students might wonder if there are going to be any other events like this on campus. Luckily, the Horizons club organizes similar events like this, for multiple cultures, for students to immerse themselves and learn about multiple holidays and cultures throughout the year.
Talking with and interviewing a few members from the Horizons club gave an inside look at what they have planned and what the members look forward to within their own club.
“I’m super excited to learn about various cultures and what they do. I also am excited to learn about how to be respectful while being part of another culture,” said Jordan Lewis, class of 2028.
“The event I’m most excited for would definitely be the multicultural fest,” said LJ Reinert, class of 2028. “I’ve heard so many things about what it’s been in the past and I’m excited to see what it will look like this year and the opportunity to speak and learn about so many different experiences.”
“Horizons is such an amazing organization, it celebrates different events across campus to celebrate international cultures and their holy days. For instance, Horizons is going to host Culture Fest this October as it hosts every year. Culture Fest is to appreciate the cultures of students from different backgrounds and let others know about their beauties. It is so fun and everyone loves it,” said Muzhda Azizi, class of 2027.
With these upcoming festivals, Horizons strives to plan the best experiences for students, so that those who want to learn about the multiple cultures we have on campus can learn and immerse themselves.
The students of the Horizons club are excited to represent their cultures and share them with the students of OWU.
