Every student has probably heard of the importance of LinkedIn as it can be a powerful tool and resource for students exploring careers. However, the setup and maintenance of an account can be overwhelming for any student.
LinkedIn is a business and employment-based social networking site that is free to sign up and use. Newton Kimberly in the Career Connection office explains that it can function as a way to connect alumni and students as well as students with potential employers.
“A lot of times it can function like a virtual version of your resume for future employers to review. It does not have a lot of the present in other social media websites and is mostly and is mostly focused on professional development and uplifting others' success.”
Some professors, in certain classes have made creating a LinkedIn account a class requirement, meaning an assignment for a grade. Others have required updates to the account, or creating connections as an assignment. Why is this? Kimberly explains the importance of a LinkedIn profile for a student.
“LinkedIn provides the opportunity to connect with professionals, build out your personal network, Identify internships and potential future job opportunities, and engage directly in professional development to help you further your career goals.” Kimberly added, “It allows you to follow role models, conduct informational interviews, attend webinars, and overall get a better look at how those have already made it in the field of your choice.”
Students who are unsure of the career field they intend to pursue may be hesitant to create an account but Kimberly stresses that once a student has their resume they should consider creating an account.
“ As soon as students have a resume prepared and people to connect with on LinkedIn, whether it be Career Connection, staff members, professors, or friends, they should make an account. It is very easy to set up and very intuitive for those that already use other social media platforms.”
Now that the how to create has been answered, Newton was asked why students should want to have an account. Why should students who are not required by a class should still set up an account on LinkedIn?
“In today's working world, networking is king. A lot of professional development and job searching comes down to who you know. LinkedIn creates an amazing opportunity to find individuals working in fields you are passionate about.” Kimberly expanded to say “This can also provide a lower stress way to network with people without needing to be face to face.”
Now some students have created a LinkedIn account and could be wondering how frequently they should be monitoring and updating their account. Kimberly explains that ultimately it is up to users' discretion and how active they choose to be on the platform.
“The more people you connect with, the more companies and figures you follow, and the more you interact with posts, the more you will get out of the experience.” In reference to himself Kimberly says “Personally, I'm on it every single day, finding alumni to connect with students, internships to advertise in my newsletters, and amazing opportunities for my own personal professional development.”
