Ohio Wesleyan's Trick or Treat with the Bishops

As the excitement of Halloween approaches, Ohio Wesleyan

University prepares for its annual event, “Trick or Treat with the Bishops.” Hosted by the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and Panhel, this evening of fun is set to take place on either October 30th or 31st. This event has evolved into a cherished tradition, connecting the university with the surrounding Delaware community and bringing families together for a night of celebration.

“Trick or Treat with the Bishops” was started by Ohio Wesleyan alumnus Clay Sturts, a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. During his time at OWU, Clay also served as the president of IFC and the community relations director. His vision for the trick-or-treating event was personal; he wanted to give back to the Delaware community while creating a space for families to enjoy quality time together. Since its founding in 2022, Clay has remained involved with university life, continuing to show his support in many different ways. Though he no longer manages this event, his commitment to community connection has inspired many, and his legacy is evident in the continued growth of this Halloween tradition.

In 2023, Nathan Zuniga, an enthusiastic senior and former IFC member, took charge of the event. Building on Clay’s vision, Nathan sought to expand the event’s reach beyond Greek life, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity and community engagement with the school.

“Last year I was grateful to be in charge of it,” Nathan shared. “I wanted to show Delaware we have a strong and united community here at OWU,” said Zuniga.

Nathan successfully opened the event to participation from campus clubs and organizations. His significant expansion attracted around 26 OWU clubs, all contributing to the fun-decorating booths and handing out candy to excited trick-or-treaters. Nathan reflected on last year’s event, “We set up areas for photos and even had a pumpkin coloring contest. It was great to see everyone come together.”

The total turnout for last year's event was impressive– “There was a ton of candy, hot cocoa, and basically everyone on campus came to pass out candy to some awesome kids dressed up with their families.” - Nathan

As for this year’s event, Nathan expressed optimism. When I asked him if he expects the 2024 gathering to mirror last year’s success, he said– “I don’t know for sure, but I hope it will gain the same attraction and it will probably be very similar.”

This year’s planning team is dedicated to maintaining the event’s fun and we have every reason to believe that this year’s trick-or-treating will be just as memorable.

Current IFC member Joe Wamalwa shared with me some insights into the preparations, indicating that “As of now, it’s set for either the 30th or 31st of October according to the head of IFC.”

Attendees are encouraged to dress in costume and can look forward to themed activities, candy, and family fun with other community members. As the event date approaches, mark your calendars and join us for “Trick or Treat with the Bishops.” Students, families, and Delaware residents are welcome!
