OWU Rugby Competes for a National Championship

After an outstanding performance at their latest tournament, the Ohio Wesleyan University Club Rugby team has qualified to compete in the National Collegiate Rugby Tournament.

On April 13th, OWU Club Rugby hosted the Ohio Valley Women’s Collegiate Rugby Conference Championship, coming out victorious with a conference championship win and a chance to win a national title.

The National Collegiate Rugby Tournament is being hosted from April 17th to 18th in Washington D.C. This will not be the first time the Bishops travel east for a national title run, as the Bishops found themselves in a similar situation last spring as well.

The Bishops have proven to be a tough team to beat in the four tournaments they have attended this spring season of 7v7 play. Starting their run on March 9th in Selby Stadium against Earlham College and Oberlin College, the team has taken this season to the final collegiate rugby tournament, where many teams do not get the chance to compete.

After the Ohio Valley Women’s Collegiate Rugby Conference Seeding Tournament on April 6th, the Bishops placed in the top four teams, qualifying them for a spot to compete for the Ohio Valley Women’s Collegiate Rugby Championship. Ohio Wesleyan Rugby won and received an automatic bid to nationals.

On Saturday, April 20th, the Bishops will find their next opponent in the national tournament via the Rugby Network Selection Show. The Bishop’s impressive success is credited to the dedicated student-athletes' hard work and the leadership of their coach Phillip Payne.
