The 50-Day Club at The Backstretch: A Unique OWU Tradition

Nate Hurley

For Ohio Wesleyan University (OWU) seniors, the countdown to graduation isn’t just about finishing classes and preparing for the next chapter—it’s also about becoming part of a long-standing community tradition.

The 50-Day Club at The Backstretch, a well-loved bar and restaurant in Delaware, Ohio, offers students a memorable way to mark their final days before commencement.

The tradition started over two decades ago when two OWU seniors, who also worked at The Backstretch, decided to visit the bar every day until graduation.

Inspired by their commitment, The Backstretch’s owner, Joanne Meyers, turned their personal challenge into an official event.

Since then, the 50-Day Club has grown into a widely anticipated tradition, with seniors eagerly participating year after year.

To become a member, participants must visit The Backstretch every day for 50 consecutive days leading up to graduation.

During each visit, they must stay for at least 30 minutes and purchase either two beverages or one food item. Contrary to what some might assume, the event doesn’t encourage excessive drinking—non-alcoholic options like coffee, soda, juice, and water also count toward the requirement.

Participants are allowed three missed days, provided they receive prior approval. Sundays are typically rest days, but for those who want to reach elite status, attendance is required between noon and 2 p.m.

Beyond the daily check-ins, the 50-Day Club features various events and perks to make the experience even more rewarding. Wednesdays include team games that encourage camaraderie and friendly competition among participants. Throughout the 50 days, members also receive prizes and freebies to keep motivation high.

One of the biggest incentives for completing the challenge is the graduation cord awarded to successful participants. These cords symbolize not only their dedication to the tradition but also their connection to the OWU community and the town of Delaware.

More than just a fun pre-graduation activity, the 50-Day Club fosters a deep sense of community between OWU students and Delaware locals. The Backstretch provides a welcoming atmosphere where students can bond, reminisce about their college experiences, and build lasting friendships before heading off into the world.

For OWU seniors, the 50-Day Club isn’t just about showing up—it’s about making memories that will last long after graduation. Whether it's enjoying a meal with friends, participating in weekly games, or simply soaking in the moment, this tradition ensures that the final days at OWU are ones to remember.
