The History Behind Son of Thurman

Ryan Duckworth

Delaware, Ohio - The Son of Thurman, located at 5 N Sandusky St, is conveniently close for students on Ohio Wesleyan University’s campus to enjoy their famous, massive, and flavorful burgers, including their signature "Thurmanator" burger.

Thurman’s has been a family-owned business since 1942. The story goes that in 1937, a 15-year-old Macedonian boy named Kosta embarked on a journey aboard the USS Aquitania to begin a new life with his family in the United States. When they arrived, they settled in Columbus, Ohio without a sufficient way to make money. They began doing what they knew best: satisfying the people around them with their unique and delicious burgers.

In 1942, around five years after they arrived in the United States, they opened their first family-owned restaurant, The Thurman Cafe in Columbus. Kosta loved serving special food and great beer while fostering a connection with his customers. As time went on, Kosta passed down the business to his grandchildren to continue the legacy. This inspired the name "Son of Thurman" to continue the tradition in Delaware, Ohio, and preserve the legacy that Kosta built for his family.

eventually turning into “The Son of Thurman”.

Nowadays, walking into Thurman’s feels like stepping into a local legend. This restaurant creates an old-school charm that perfectly sets the stage for what it’s famous for– its massive, flavor-packed burgers that dare you to finish them.

The first thing you notice is the atmosphere is cozy, lively, and filled with families, groups of friends, and devoted regulars. Signed dollar bills cover the walls, each one telling a piece of Thurman’s long history. It’s a space that feels lived-in and loved.

Every bite delivers a messy, juicy burst of flavor, the kind of indulgence that leaves your hands greasy and your appetite thoroughly satisfied. It’s impossible to rush this experience, partly because the burgers are huge, but also because Thurman’s is the kind of place that invites you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the chaos of it all.

The Son of Thurman isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a living tribute to a family’s journey, dedication, and love for serving up great food. With its rich history, inviting atmosphere, and iconic burgers, it stands as a staple for both Delaware locals and Ohio Wesleyan students. Every visit is a celebration of flavor and tradition. At the heart of it all is a legacy built on family, community, and the joy of good food that makes The Son of Thurman a true gem in Delaware’s dining scene.
