The Ross Art Museum Presents the 2024 Juried Exhibit

Have you visited the Ross Art Museum on campus?

It’s free to students and the 2024 juried exhibit is on display now!

The Richard Ross Art Museum is currently displaying the Ohio Art League’s 2024 Fall Juried Exhibition, and students have the privilege of experiencing this year’s Ohio artwork through September 27. The exhibition is designed to showcase the talents of artists from all over the state.

In a statement regarding the juror, the museum notes that “[The juror’s] choices reveal the richness and variety of art being produced in our region.” Several Ohio Wesleyan University Students took some time to recall what the exhibit has to offer and how they reflect on it.

The Ohio Art League (OAL) Fall Juried Exhibition is one of the most anticipated annual occurrences for artists in the region.

“[It] begins with an open call to emerging and established artists from across the state.” states the museum. With this year’s 406 entries, the juror: Philip Sugden, an esteemed artist based in Findlay, had to whittle the final count to an astonishing 108 remaining pieces ranging from photographs to paintings and more.

The artworks on display at the Ross Art Museum are only a fraction of the final count. However, they give a well-rounded look at what kinds of work Sugden thought reflected the spirit of Ohio.

Matthew Higgins, an active student at Ohio Wesleyan had the opportunity to share some of his initial reactions and what he sees in the various pieces. Higgins found that there was an equal balance between a variety of mediums on display along with a refreshing experience with each work.

“We live in a broken world,” says Higgins. “If these artworks aren’t making any kind of commentary on that topic, they provide a certain type of distraction. A fictional frame to help take your mind off of it.”

Higgins strongly recommends visiting the museum at some point before the end of the current exhibit.

Amanda Matias Gonzalez, another student studying at Ohio Wesleyan had a different take on the exhibit. After reviewing the exhibit, Gonzalez was keen to notice the wide appeal for students of all backgrounds.

“Even if you’re not an art-minded person.” Gonzalez notes “There are certain qualities that shine through with each piece to intrigue the viewer.”

Knowing this, Gonzalez was happy to enjoy the artworks for what they were. Paying attention to color palettes and subject matter rather than any subliminal meaning. Gonzalez asks the rhetorical question: “Why get caught up in an interconnected meaning when you can enjoy a picture for its face value?”

While the OAL’s 2024 Juried Exhibition’s time at Ohio Wesleyan will be over before the end of the month, the Ross Art Museum will certainly be open during the school year with more art to share through its many different exhibits. The museum is open to students at no cost, so feel free to stop by during the museum’s normal hours of operation. You may find that there’s something to experience whatever your academic background may be.
